U Kiang Nangbah – 2

Kiang_Nangbah_1_400x400

There  is no record as to when  was Kiang Nangbah  was born, but it  was assumed that he was still a toddler when  the Khasi and Jaintia  clan was annexed  by the British  in 1835

Legends say that u Kiang Nangbah is from the Laskor clan And came from the Nangbah village.

He was the son of Rimai  Laskor, he was not from the royals backgrounds. He was a farmer like every young man in the village

As he grew  older,  he grew  a deep dislike towards the  British  because  of their  interference  in our believes and   culture

It’s beginning to take shape  when  the British  pass a degree that we  have to pay  all kind of taxes  like land and trade tax toward the British, Kiang Nangbah  became furious and  declared that he won’t pay  any tax  to foreigners  and urge the people  not to pay  too

Angered by their refusal the British  officials  vehemently entered   and ransacked their house, they  took  whatever  they find valuable

This is not the end of it ..  they even took the cremation site of the people and order them not to burn their dead. The British   even tried to suppress their religious beliefs

The immediate cause of the resistance was triggered by the incident that took place in Ialong. On the occasion of the traditional  dance   when the British  confiscate  all  the weapon  that is meant  for the festival  and burned  them in front  of the people

The activities if the British government made the Jaintia people determined not to remain mute spectators but to fight and rise arm in arms to protect their land customs and beliefs.

To be continued…..
